[NEW YORK] TURNER, AUSTON AUGUSTUS. Villas on the Hudson. A Collection of Photo-Lithographs of Thirty-One Country Residences...
. New York: Appleton, 1860. Original publisher's green cloth. Three preliminary leaves, 31 photo-lithographic plates (most with two tints applied by stencil, with gold-printed frames and captions, and 21 floor plans. Neatly rebacked retaining a portion of the original spine, the corners worn, the preliminary three leaves creased (leaving a slight impress on the first plate, the plans generally toned, the plates largely clean.
The basis for this work, generally considered to be the first large-scale work to use the new process of photo-lithography in the U.S., are the photographs of A.A. Turner, taken 1858-9, on the eve of the Civil War. The lavish homes depicted included those of Peter Lorillard, the tobacco magnate, William Aspinwall, etc. A remarkable work, and quite rare, both aesthetically pleasing and an important technical milestone in American printing. Hitchcock 1275; Truthful Lens 173.
