Lot 460

. "Londre" [but Paris]: s.n., 1755-1773. Full armorial calf of the period, with the supralibros on the covers of each volume of the 4th Duke d'Aumont, Louis-Marie-August, all edges gilt. 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches (16.5 x 9.5 cm); frontispiece, various paginations. Some wear to bindings, overall fairly sound. With the name on the title pages of the Chevalier D'Espagnac.
This was a controversial work, as Marsy, a former Jesuit, compiled (in the first four volumes) all of Bayle that was unfavorable to religion. Much of the edition was burned, and the author was sent to the Bastille. The remaining four volumes (slightly different in style of binding because of the elapsed time) were compiled by Jean-Baptiste-René Robinet and did not appear until 1773 in Holland
