Lot Details

Lot 99
[Everest]
Postcard bearing image of Everest from Base Camp in the Rongbuk Valley, Tibet and printed note "Best wishes -- J.B.L. Noel. Captain / Mt. Everest Expedition, with Mount Everest Expedition stamp, red cache, Indian stamp and British Empire Exhibition stamp, postmark post-dated 30 October 1924, Calcutta, addressed to Mr. Archer, Montreal, Canada. These postcards were a promotional scheme devised by J.B.L. Noel before the 1924 expedition lead by C.G. Bruce got underway. Noel contrived that these postcards, which were written by the recepients to themselves while the climbers were still in Britain, would encourage support and excitement when dispatched by postal runners from Tibet to India and eventually back to the recipients. Noel miscalculated, and no fortune came by way of this project.
