Clemens, Samuel L. (Mark Twain)
Autograph letter signed with initials ("S.L.C."), three pages, 8vo, Hartford, 29 September 1889, to "Dear Clara [Spaulding Stanchfield]." The letter discusses his involvement in the new typesetting machines in which he has persuaded Mrs. Stanchfield to invest. The letter is full of enthusiasm... "You will not need to know anything about the printing business in order to understand the grin on this machine's face when it is thinking about this world's other type-setting machines. Dear me, those others -- they are bound straight for the junk-shop; every one of them." Clemens also discusses the employment of a new stenographer and the recording of the typesetter in the patent office. Clemens's investment in this machine was soon lost and brought about his eventual bankruptcy in 1894.
Provenance: Clara Spaulding Stanchfield, by descent to the present owner.
Property of a Maryland Family
