Doyle’s auction of Important Jewelry on October 19, 2016 showcased dazzling jewelry by the world’s most prestigious makers, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb and Tiffany & Co., with offerings spanning the Antique, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern eras. Highlighting the sale was a selection of stunning pieces set with high carat weight diamonds and colored gemstones.

With competitive bidding in the salesroom, on the telephones and on the Internet, the sale totaled a strong $5,169,688, near the top end of the estimate of $3,840,450-5,490,050, with a strong 78% sold by lot and 89% sold by value.

Colored Gemstones

Tying for top lot with four other pieces was a brooch set with a rare Padparadscha sapphire of 'Classic' Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin weighing approx. 9.01 carats, from the Estate of Cora Nunnally Miller. The stone attracted a great deal of interest at the sale, which sent the piece soaring past its estimate of $12,000-18,000 to achieve a stunning $162,500. Padparadscha sapphires are the rarest and most prized form of sapphires. Their unusual color in the pinkish-orange range inspired its name, which is derived from the Sinhalese word for lotus blossom.

Also selling for $162,500 was a Burma sapphire and diamond ring of approx. 12.76 carats from the Estate of Grace Kirby Culbertson.

Diamond Rings

Two diamond rings also shared in the title of top lot. A ring set with a pear-shaped modified brilliant-cut diamond of approx 8.65 carats, D color, SI2 clarity, doubled its estimate of $70,000-90,000, selling for $162,500. The same price was achieved by a diamond and cabochon emerald ring from the Estate of Lee Kosow, Palm Beach, FL and Chestnut Hill, MA, set with an emerald-cut diamond of approx. 14.84 carats, M color, VS1 clarity.

Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery-Set Brooch

Van Cleef & Arpels patented the firm’s mystery-set process in 1933, and the demand for these exquisite pieces has never diminished. A mystery-set ruby and sapphire and diamond flower clip-brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels achieved $162,500, well over its estimate of $75,000-125,000. The circa 1957 brooch was the property of a Prominent Greek Lady.
