Pair of George III Mahogany Side Chairs in the manner of Wright and Elwick
Circa 1760
Each upholstered serpentine backrest above an overupholstered serpentine seat and raised on molded egg-and-dart-carved legs headed by brackets. Height 37 1/2 inches (95.3 cm), width 24 inches (61 cm), depth 19 inches (48.2 cm).
The egg-and-dart carving and the foliate carving to the brackets are characteristic features of the documented work of the leading Yorkshire cabinet-making firm of Wright and Elwick (1745-1771). A related suite of five library armchairs was sold, Christie`s house sale, Swinton House, Masham, Yorkshire, October 20-21, 1975, lot 17.
