George III Sabicu and Part-Ebonized Metamorphic Library Table/Steps
The rectangular top hinged to one end and enclosing a set of collapsible steps and articulated handrails, all sides of the frieze with dummy drawers, raised on chamfered square legs, on leather casters. Height 32 3/4 inches (83.3 cm), height (extended) 79 inches (200.7 cm), width 48 1/4 inches (122.5 cm), depth 24 1/4 inches (62.2 cm).

The design for the present libary steps was patented by the London cabinet-maker Robert Campbell in 1774 and was later illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 3rd edition, London, 1802, plate V. A related set of steps at Petworth House, Sussex, is illustrated by Margaret Jourdain and F. Rose, English Furniture The Georgian Period (1750-1830), London, 1953, p. 200, fig. 172.
