Publisher's red pictorial cloth gilt. 8 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; xii, 428, 24 pp.; folding map, half-title, publisher's advertisements. Recased preserving much of the original spine, extremities bumped, cloth darkened, endpapers renewed, text block lightly toned.
"The author worked the goldfields in the Transvaal in the 1860s, falling afoul of the law and taking to the bush. He also fought during the various 'Kaffir' wars of the region, and provides considerable detail of his travels. There is one chapter on sport with mention of hunting elephant, lion, giraffe, wildebeest (from horseback) and a variety of plains antelope" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 12.
