Lot Details
Lot 91
CHAPMAN, ABEL Savage Sudan. Its Wild Tribes, Big-Game and Bird-Life.
London: Gurney and Jackson, 1921. First edition, the author's own copy. Publisher's green pictorial cloth gilt, in dust jacket. 9 x 6 inches; xx, 452 pp.; map frontispiece, plates, in-text illustrations, half-title, with letter addressed to Chapman from Arnold Pike loosely inserted. Jacket torn and toned with loss, cloth extremities bumped, foxing throughout, frontispiece loose.
The author's own copy, with his bookplate to the front pastedown, and a letter addressed to him from arctic explorer Arnold Pike. In the letter (dated 1891?), Pike asks if Chapman still has Pike's "Spitbergen [sic] Diaries" because "Phillipps Wolley has exacted a sort of promise from me to write something for him & if he holds me to it I must have the diary." Pike is referring to the diaries he kept while overwintering in Spitsbergen in 1888-1889. Ultimately Pike did contribute (along with Chapman, Selous, and others) to Clive Phillipps-Wolley's Big Game Shooting, published in 1894. An excellent association copy in the scarce dust jacket. For the Phillipps-Wolley publication, see lot 297. Czech, Africa, p. 60.
C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
