London: Henry and Co., 1894. First edition. Publisher's red cloth gilt. 9 x 5 3/4 inches; xiv, 322, 14 pp.; folding map, in-text illustrations, half-title, publisher's advertisements. Spine sunned with one or two stains, extremities worn, short tear to map near mount and two-inch tear to interior of map, prize label to front pastedown.
"Donovan landed at Cape Town in 1893 to enjoy a big game hunt into the veldt country near the Limpopo River. Buffalo, eland and sabel were collected, with hippopotamus bagged on the Umtelique River and additional sport after lion and kudu. The sporting adventure had just come to an end when the First Matabele War erupted, wtih the author participating in that action" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 83.
