Publisher's green cloth gilt. 8 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches; xv, [475] pp.; color frontispiece, plates, numerous in-text illustrations, half-title. Extremities worn, somewhat overopened, else fine.
Early impression with the drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back legs on pp. 65, 337, and 457 and Snowball the horse being dragged out of the river on p. 316, which were corrected in later impressions. This book originated as bedtime stories Fitzpatrick told to his four children, along with his dear friend Rudyard Kipling. It was Kipling who encouraged him to publish the stories as the present book. Mendelssohn I:550 ("perhaps one of the best dog stories ever written").
