London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881. First edition. Two volumes. Publisher's brown cloth in slipcase. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches; xxiv, 320; viii, 323, 32 pp.; mounted photographic frontispieces, 2 folding maps, half-title in volume one, publisher's advertisements. Recased preserving much of the original spines, upper cover of volume one repaired, endpapers renewed, boards a bit rubbed, without the half-title in volume two, scattered foxing.
Thomson was the first European to cross the 250-mile plateau between lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika. Hilmy II, p. 285; Howgego IV, T20.
