Russian Silver-Gilt Guilloché and Champlevé Enamel Vanity Case
Third Artel, St. Petersburg, 1908-1917
Rectangular, with three hinged compartments, each with a rose-cut diamond-set thumb-piece, the largest compartment fitted with a mirror, enameled in translucent rose Pompadour over an engine-turned ground within opaque white enamel and chased laurel borders. Length 4 1/4 inches (10.8 cm).

Provenance:
Mary B. Warburton (née Wanamaker), Philadelphia.
Diamonds and Jewelry from the Estate of the Late Mary B. Warburton, sold William D. Morley, Philadelphia, December 15, 1958, lot 391.
Then by descent to the previous owner.

A prominent member of Philadelphia society, Mary Brown Warburton (1869-1954), was the daughter of John Wanamaker (1838-1922), the department store pioneer, philanthropist and Postmaster General. She was married to Barclay Harding Warburton I (1866-1954), publisher of the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph, President Wilson's charge d'affairs in London from 1914 until 1917, and General Pershing's aides de camp in Paris.

A nearly identical vanity case by the Third Artel was sold Christie's, New York, April 16, 2012, lot 23.
