Russian Carved Wood Trompe L'Oeil Chair
After a design by Vasilii Shutov, 19th century
The back rest and front legs in the form of a harness carved with the Russian inscription: Tishe edesh - dal'she budesh [Driving slower, you will advance further], with a splat carved to simulate leather straps, the axe-form handles set in an ogee arch-form seat centering a rosette and with a pair of gloves at the back. Height of back 34 1/2 inches (88 cm.), width of seat 25 inches (64 cm.), depth of seat 25 1/2 inches (65 cm.).
