George III Mahogany Chest-on-Chest

In the manner of Thomas Chippendale
In two parts, the upper section with two short over three long graduated cockbeaded drawers, the lower section with three long drawers and raised on bracket feet; with laminated blocks, the drawers with short grain kickers, chamfered drawer stops, red wash to backs and underside; later handles. Height 69 inches (175.3 cm), width 44 inches (111.7 cm), depth 23 inches (58.5 cm).
A preparatory drawing by Thomas Chippendale for The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, for an identical 'Chest of Drawers' is found in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; acc. no. 20.40.2(81), with inscription to the upper right: N 86; top center: Chest of Drawers; on blue paper: 195. It was dated 1753 and published in reverse as plate LXXXVI in the first and second editions of the Director, 1754 and 1755, but not used in the third edition, published in 1762.
