Yarn Sewn and Shirred Pictorial Hearth Rug
Circa 1835
Depicting two houses within a meandering vine border with fringe.
Approximately 2 feet 5 x 4 feet 4 1/4 inches.

This example was featured in American Hooked and Sewn Rugs, Folk Art Underfoot, Kopp, p. 33, pl. 31. Although there are no dated examples of shirred rugs, most were made between 1825-1860. The shirring method used cloth strips sewn on top of the cloth base. This rug incorporates yarn sewing for the sky and middle section. The rest of the rug is caterpillar-shirred, which is made by gathering cloth into folds and stitching them to a base.
