NIXON, RICHARD Typed letter initialed as President.
Washington: 28 January 1970. Single-page typed letter on one sheet of White House stationery, initialed "RN", the letter addressed to the "Honorable Del Clawson/House of Representatives," 8 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches, (22.5 x 17 cm), usual fold, minor handling creases, one marginal spot.
The day after vetoing a major health, education and anti-poverty appropriations bill, President Nixon lets a Republican California Congressmen know "how much I admired your strong -- and politically difficult -- stand today to sustain my veto of the excessive appropriations for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Time will show that this vote was in ... the vital interest of all Americans in braking the rise in the cost of living." Nixon closes by inviting Clawson to an informal White House reception that evening to express his appreciation.
