Lot 114
[INDIAN SKETCHES, ENGLISH SCHOOL] An album containing fine sketches of scenery and sporting activities, with many portrait caricatures.
Most likely Purneah (Bihar), 1829-1831. Variously pencil, ink, or pencil and wash, one signed with initials "I.E.E.", some drawings notated 1829 or 1830, paper watermarked 1825. Original half roan, marbled boards. 9 x 13 inches (23 x 33 cm), sketches on recto and verso of 21 ff., some on sheets loosely inserted, a few mounted. Some wear and soiling.
The sketches range from rather crude or incomplete to accomplished, with the landscapes mostly falling under the latter heading. We have been unable to trace I.E.E., but the style and dates may suggest the influence of Sir Charles D'Oyly (who was in turn influenced by George Chinnery).
C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
