Lot 141
[MEDITERRANEAN] [POUND, DUDLEY]. Shooting in the Mediterranean.
[Printed for private circulation]: s.n, n.d. (but likely 1926, from internal evidence and WorldCat). Publisher's boards, black cloth spine. 12 3/4 x 8 1/8 inches (32 x 20 cm); [3], 85 ff., printed and paginated rectos only. Some wear and soiling to covers, text clean and sound.
Pound, an eminent Royal Navy officer, was at this time Chief of Staff to Roger Keyes with the Mediterranean Fleet. While undoubtedly a very useful sporting guide, the rationale for the work seems to have been much intelligence gathering as anything else: "Time spent in putting together these notes will be amply repaid if those who obtain additional information will send it to the Intelligence Officer of the Fleet Flagship in order that it may be promulgated for the common good." This may, of course, refer solely to sporting tips; but then again, it may not! The work appears to be rare both institutionally and at auction.
