Original mustard pictorial cloth with design in gilt and black, housed in a chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. 7 1/2 x 4 7/8 inches (19 x 12.5 cm); frontispiece, 231, (viii) pp., with illustrations by Frederick S. Church and James H. Moser. Wear to binding, stitching broken and several leaves and signatures loose, several loose leaves with some edge wear and chipping.
A nonpareil American juvenile classic. BAL notes three states (which, as the editors say, are probably printings). This copy conforms to the first state, with the "presumptive" reading on page 9, and the correct ads (no mention of this title).
