[AMERICA-HUNTING] [SPANGLER, ANDREW M.]. A Paradise for Gunners and Anglers.
[Philadelphia]: (Passenger Department) Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad Company [printed at the Press of Allen, Lane & Scott], 1883. First edition, large paper copy, apparently unique thus. Bound in full brown morocco, spine stamped in gilt, with blue paper onlay of sailing boat and title to upper cover, lower cover with blue paper onlay of duck hunters, satin endsheets, all edges gilt. 11 7/8 x 9 3/8 inches (30 x 23.5 cm); 96 pp.; illustrated with cuts throughout. Recased, with repairs to spine, rear free endpaper mounted (losses at outer margin. Bookplate of F.P. Williamson,
A guidebook for outdoor sports (chiefly angling, marshland gunning, and duck shooting) on the Delaware and Maryland Peninsula. Wetzel, Bruns, and Hand describe a duodecimo pamphlet produced as a promotional piece (the copyright is in the name of J.R. Wood, General Passenger Agent, Pennsylvania Railroad); Hand describes a copy given free to purchasers of Spangler's 'Near- By' (1889), so stamped on the upper cover, and signed by Spangler in that year, but, important to note, the 1883 date of the present work precedes 'Near-By' by six years. The duodecimo printing includes a folding map, not present here. This copy is printed on large quarto leaves and elaborately bound, evidently a presentation binding, and is apparently unrecorded in this format, a most attractive work. c.f. Wetzel p. 194; Bruns p. 355 (from Wetzel); Hand S-474.
