London: Smith, Elder, 1863. First edition in book form, first issue without the comma after "Eliot" on the title page of volume III. Three volumes. Original cloth gilt lettered in spines, housed in a folding cloth case. 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; iv, 336 pp.; iv, 333 pp., ad leaf at end; iv, 292 pp. A very fine set. Small stray ink spot to cover of volume III and edge of volume II, lightly foxed throughout, minor edgewear.

A very bright copy in original cloth of the first edition of George Eliot's Romola, issued in book form upon completion of its serialization in Cornhill Magazine. The set is scarce in cloth, particularly in such fine condition.
