Lot 187
PIOZZI, HESTER LYNCH [THRALE] Observations and Reflections Made Through a Journey Through France, Italy, Germany.
Dublin: H. Chamberlaine..., 1789. First Dublin edition. Period mottled calf, gilt ruled spine, red leather spine label. 8 x 4 1/2 inches; vii, [1], 592 pp. Rubbed with losses to leather, corners bumped, spine skillfully repaired with some leather replacement, lacking rear endpaper, manuscript annotations on title and the final two leaves, bookplate.

One of the few 18th-century accounts of the grand tour written by a woman. Hester Piozzi, or Hester Thrale, was an author, a diarist, a patron of the arts and a close friend to Samuel Johnson, about whom she "wrote the only contemporaneous account that gives a credibly different picture of what the great man was like" (Adam Gopnik, "Man of Fetters." The New Yorker, December 8, 2008).
