Lot Details

Lot 227
STEINBECK, JOHN The First Watch.
[Los Angeles: Privately printed for Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn], Christmas 1947. First edition, number 31 of 60 copies printed by Ward Ritchie (the first 10 copies reserved for Steinbeck and the balance for Christmas gift presentation by the Cohns). Stitched in original wrappers, without glassine, held in a pink envelope. 5 1/4 x 4 1/8 inches; 6 [1] pp. Some very minor thumbsoiling.
An ephemeral and rare Steinbeck title, issued as a Christmas gift by Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn, proprietors of House of Books in New York. The text reprints a letter from Steinbeck to Esquire editor Arnold Gingrich thanking him for a watch and recalling his unfulfilled expectations of receiving a watch at his graduations from junior high, high school, and Stanford, although he never graduated from the latter. Goldstone & Payne A26a.
