[STAGE DESIGN] MIELZINER, JO. Set design for Lemist Esler The Grey Fox (Machiavelli)
. Signed verso in pencil "Jo Mielziner", dated 1928. 8 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches (22.5 x 30 cm); black and grey inks on illustration board. Fine. Framed.
Mielziner, one of the most influential 20th century stage designers, had debuted on Broadway in 1927, and this powerful drawing was prepared for the Epilogue of Esler's historical drama The Grey Fox (Machiavelli) the following year. The design shows Machiavelli and Biagio at the beginning of the scene in (to quote the play) "A small, much-used, rather shabby living room-library. At rear, a short flight of stairs leads up to a garden..." it is a powerful piece, showing the play as it was performed, with the gaunt and aged title character with his amanuensis, a composition that is almost Rembrandtesque in its chiaroscuro. Sold with a modern set design signed "Baldesston."
