[PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY] Two seventeenth century Massachusetts militia appointments, each signed by the governors of the time.
Comprises the appointment of Jonas Prescott as a Captain of a Foot Company of Militia in the town of Groton, 10th May, 1695. 7 3/8 x 12 inches (19 x 30 cm); single-page secretarially accomplished document written on a folded sheet of paper (conjugate blank except as noted), wafer seal of the Province of Massachusetts Bay affixed at upper left, the appointment written in black ink in an English roundhand by J.S. Addington (the Governor's secretary); signed by William Stoughton as acting Governor and Addington as secretary. Usual folds, some toning and soiling, small loss to the crossed folds at the center just touching one letter; and the appointment of Jonas Prescott as a Captain of the Foot Company of Militia in the town of Groton, 4th October, 1699. 11 x 15 1/2 inches (28 x 39.5 cm); single-page secretarially accomplished document written on a single ruled sheet of paper (verso blank), wafer sale of the Province of Massachusetts Bay affixed at upper left, the appointment written in black ink in an English roundhand by J.S. Addington (the Governor's secretary); signed by Richard Coote, 1st Earl of Bellmont as Governor (signing as "Bellmont") and Addington as secretary. Usual folds, some toning and soiling, small separation to the crossed folds at the center and to the edges of the sheet at the folds.
Appointments by seventeenth century Massachusetts governors are uncommon in commerce.
