[MAP--UNITED STATES] Phelps and Ensign's New Travellers' Guide and Map of the United States, containing the Roads, Distances, Steam Boat and Canal Routes &c.
New York: Phelps & Ensign, 1841. Engraved map and vignettes on several joined sheets, with partial hand-color, on the original rollers, the linen backing appears somewhat recent. 27 x 40 inches (70 x 102 cm); mounted in a fine shadowbox frame by APF Munn Master Framers. Lightly toned, not as severe as other copies, several small abraded areas, some repaired tears, dampstain in lower margin above roller and within the shadowbox at lower corners, not examined out of the large frame.

An early issue of Phelps & Ensign's ambitious and highly decorative wall map of the United States. First issued in 1838, it is here expanded beyond the Mississippi to the Republic of Texas (with Austin's Colony indicated), the Missouri Territory, and the Rocky Mountains. In the West, numerous Native American tribes are located as is the "Extensive Buffalo Plains" in modern Minnesota. Insets within the border of the map offer the world, various American cities, and a very small Declaration of Independence, replete with facsimile signatures. Below the border are portraits of American presidents on two affixed sheets in the lower corners, the latest president being William Henry Harrison who died in office after just one month in office in April 1841. Finally, historical scenes from the signing of the Declaration and Revolution are inset alongside a portrait of the 17th century Native American tribal leader Metacom (using his adopted English name King Philip). We trace few examples of this early edition of the map, particularly in collectible condition and retaining the original rollers.
