[TSAR NICHOLAS II] BOUTET de MONVEL, LOUIS-MAURICE. Jeanne d'Arc.
Paris: E. Plon, Nourrit & Cie, [1896]. An exemplaire nominatif for Nicholas II, with an especially printed presentation leaf to him signed by Boutet de Monvel, one of the artist's exemplaire reservé printed on papier pelure du Japon, the sheets selected and retouched by the artist (according to the colophon). Oblong silk-backed boards of publication stamped in gilt, cream silk pastedown and front free endsheet, patterned silk endleaves, all edges gilt, housed in a leather-lipped cloth slipcase, with the arms of Nicholas II in gilt. 14 x 19 inches (35.5 x 48 cm); 50 ff. window-mounted in elaborate passe-partouts on guards as issued (includes 48 color lithographs by the author). Some fraying to the spine, which is toned, internally the front hinge weak but holding, scattered foxing to mounts (and, infrequently, the plates).
There were approximately 30 deluxe subscription copies and an unknown number of artist copies for presentation issued in this format on tissue (i.e. papier pelure du Japon). This copy was prepared for Tsar Nicholas II, the Emperor of all the Russias, as witnessed by the specially printed first leaf signed by De Monvel. There was a secondary deluxe edition on papier de chine. This is an extraordinary royal copy of this monument of French fin de siècle illustration, prepared (and presumably received by) Tsar Nicholas, although this copy doesn't have any Tsarskoye Selo bookplate or discernible shelf marks. The Tsar visited Paris, to enormous acclaim, in the year of publication, and may have received the book at that time. Ray Artist and the Book in France 365.
