Lot 194
[ANGLING] BERGMAN, RAY. Trout.
Philadelphia: The Penn Publishing Company, [1938]. First edition, number 101 of 149 copies inscribed by the author. Full gilt stamped morocco in publisher's slipcase, with the separate sleeve of 16 oversize plates in the publisher's envelope. 9 x 6 1/2 inches (23 x 16.5 cm); color plates by Edgar Burke, photographs after Charles S. Krug; diagrams by Ivin Sickles. Very light wear, but a near-fine copy, rare with the sleeve of plates, almost invariably absent.
Bergman was the most important angling write of his day, as noted by the New York Times: "The only true American angling classic still read widely is Ray Bergman's Trout. It remains the best all-around basic text, managing to cover fundamentals of theory and practice in a smooth and relaxed way. Trout remains our Old Testament, the first and only book many anglers look to for guidance." Bruns B134.
