Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat 1985 Exhibition Poster.
New York: circa October 1985. Color printed poster with photographic reproductions of Warhol and Basquiat wearing boxing gloves by Michael Halsband over a bright yellow background, the text in red. 19 x 12 inches (48.5 x 30.5 cm); framed. Mounted to foam core.
Any Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat met in the late 1970s and collaborated on over 200 works of art. The culmination of the relationship was the 1985 Paintings exhibition at the Shafrazi Gallery for which this is the striking poster. The poster has become one of the most recognizable of the era. The opening night was so crowded that it was described as "impossible to see the artwork, which served more as a backdrop to the theatre of the moment ... the large, mechanically rendered logo-symbology by Warhol was willingly insulted by the wild, gestural hand of Basquiat." This was the last major collaboration in Warhol's lifetime.
