[FLORIDA] SHERMAN, CHARLES E. Long letter to Senator John P. Hale of New Hampshire on Florida land claims.
Washington: 26 March 1860. A long 8 page letter (really a legal brief) on the recto and verso of the pages of two bifolium, addressed to Hale at the head, 13 x 8 inches (33 x 20 cm). Folds, else fine.
Charles Sherman here writes New Hampshire Senator John P. Hale as attorney for Florida land claimants: "I have read your remarks on the East Florida Claims in the Congressional Globe of the 22nd Inst. and I freely confess that if the facts were as you assume on the supposed authority of Mr. Orr & the Supreme Court, the cases ought to be kicked out of Congress...." The letter continues describing the case from all angles and reviewing the English and Dutch sides of the case, various treaties, the constituionality of the Supreme Court case, etc. He closes with "If the Hon. Mr. Hale will be so kind as to give me half and hour I think I can confirm his first opinion in these cases." A note laid in reports this letter sold Parke Bernet, 9 April 1968, sale 2632, lot 78.
