Lot 126
[FLORIDA-STREETER COPY] TAYLOR, ROBERT BARRAUD and SAMSON, WILLIAM. The validity of the title of R. S. Hackley, to Florida lands, demonstrated by the eminent jurists, General Taylor of Virginia, and William Samson, Esq. of New York.
[New York: 1822]. First edition, the Thomas W. Streeter copy. Disbound pamphlet. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm); 15 pp. Later tape along spine, toned, a small loss at head of first leaf where a label has been removed, this affecting some words on the verso, with T. W. Streeter's small label to the inside corner of the last leaf.
"As might be expected, both General Taylor and Mr. Samson hold that Hackley, our consul in Spain, held a good title, as against the United States, to the grant of lands in East Florida made by the King of Spain to the Duke of Alagon on 17 December 1817. The conveyance by the Duke to Mr. Hackley was on 29 May 1819. The reasoning was spun pretty fine and was not sustained in the courts.--TWS" (Streeter). Sabin 94533; Streeter 1207 (this copy).
