Lot 166
JUSTEL, HENRI Recueil de Divers Voyages faits en Afrique et en L'Amerique.
Paris: Chez Louis Billaine, 1674. First edition. Early 19th-century quarter morocco gilt. 9 x 6 1/2 inches (23 x 17 cm); with 14 engraved plates and maps only (of 18, without the frequently missing map of the Nile). Ink notations to title, spotting and faint stains, repairs to tears into folding plate and one map, one text leaf with paper replacement and the ends of several lines supplied in early manuscript, sold as is.

A rare and important work collecting many voyages, the principal works being a translation of Richard Ligon's description of Barbados, La Borde's Relation des Caraibes and Relation de la Guaine, and a translation of Richard Blome's A Description of the Island of Jamaica. The history of Barbados is illustrated with fine engraved plates of vegetation. The maps include Jamaica and the east coast of North America. Many copies are found lacking plates, particularly the large folding chart of the Nile, as here. Sabin 36944.
