Lot 226
[MAYAN ART] GORDON, GEORGE B. AND JOHN A. MASON (EDS.). Examples of Maya Pottery in the Museum and Other Collections.
Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania, 1925-1928-1943. Black portfolio--likely later--containing parts I-III (all published), the original paper covers for the first part mounted to the front cover and pastedown respectively. 20 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches (52 x 38 cm); title leaf, plate lists for each part, the plates very fine collotypes. many in color, produced by Emery Walker, the parts wrapper for the second part laid-in. The portfolio worn, the attached parts wrapper frayed, the contents generally fine.

A rare work, rarely found complete with all plates as this example. G. B. Gordon, the editor, died during the preparation of the second part. Mason, the co-editor, then oversaw the completion of that part, but of the anticipated four parts of 25 plates apiece, only 16 plates of the third were eventually published. These are present here. The plates are after the superb watercolors of Mary Louise Baker, see
