Lot 321
WOOD, JOHN A correct statement of the various sources from which the History of the administration of John Adams was compiled, and the motives for its suppression by Col. Burr...
New York: printed for the author by G. & R. Waite, 1802. Second edition, corrected with notes. Later half burgundy morocco, marbled boards, in slipcase. 8 1/8 x 4 5/8 inches (20.75 x 12 cm); 58 pp. Rebacked. Internally clean.
Aaron Burr bought up and suppressed Wood's The history of the administration of John Adams, esq., late president of the United States, an anti-Federalist work. John Cheetham got wind of this, and published a caustic pamphlet entitled A Narrative of the Suppression by Col. Burr of the History of the Administration of John Adams. In these pages, Wood claimed that the suppression was done as a favor to himself because of egregious errors in the original book, not on political grounds as Cheetham claimed, and attempted in this to exonerate Burr from that charge. Howes W629; Together with BOWEN, NATHANIEL. An Oration, Delivered in Providence, on the Fifth of July, 1802, in Commemoration of American Independence. Providence: John Carter, [1802]. First edition, inscribed on title page by Bowen to Rev. Ed Jenkins. 18 pp., lacks final text leaf. Bound with an oration by David Ramsay, lacking title but [An Oration, on the Cession of Louisiana, to the United States], [Charleston: circa 1804]. 27 pp. Later marbled boards with paper label to period style. 8 x 5 inches (20 x 13 cm). Both works sold as-is, not subject to return.
