Four volumes, period diced calf, all edges sprinkled red. 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (26.6 x 21.5 cm); Vol. 1, Russia, Tartary & Turkey: xvii, [15], 800 pp.; Vol. 2 (first section of second part, Greece, Egypt & the Holy Land); xix, [13] pp., 715 pp.; Vol. 3 (second section of second part), xv, [12], 822 pp., 2 pp. ads; Vol. 4 (3rd section of second part), xx, [14], 735 pp. plus errata page; 137 plates, including 8 folding maps and charts. Some binding wear, neatly rebacked, without the two final volumes (published subsequently?), occasional spotting or offsetting, in all a clean set.
Clarke, a voracious traveler, was also a clergyman, a mineralogist and an accomplished chemist. He was University Librarian at Cambridge as of 1817. His travels were enormously popular reading, and ran to at least four editions.
