[OUT WARD] A Map of a Parcel of Land belonging to the Estate of the late Peter Warren lying at Greenwich.
Manuscript map in ink on paper, with "Plotted ... by B. Taylor Nov. 2nd 1795/New York Jany 6th 1830 Copied from the Original by E. Smith" in ink below the title. The map backed. 18 1/2 x 23 inches (47 x 58 cm). A few stains over title lettering, tears, some dust soiling and spotting, well preserved overall.
As suggested by the text on the map in lot 12, in 1830 City Surveyor Edwin Smith was able to copy late 18th century survey maps of the Out Ward lands formerly owned by British Admiral Sir Peter Warren (1703-1752). In this copy of the 1795 survey, the lots are well delineated and fully distributed when compared to the 1773 map in lot 12 (this map shows the lots of Mr. John Rogers who likely furnished Smith with his papers). The map shows lands in the Out Ward, then known as Greenwich, near today's 8th Avenue and 21st Street. This area was the northern extent of the nearly 300 acres amassed by Warren, husband of Susannah DeLancey, whose family owned a similarly large estate nearby. On Ratzer's 1766 survey, the area of the present map is shown as "Lady Warren." Susannah died in 1771 and Warren's three daughter's inherited these lands. Rural roads were named for their husbands: The Earl of Abingdon (here Abbington), Charles Fitzroy, later Baron Southampton, and Lt. Col. William Skinner. Abingdon Road was also known as "Love Lane" and was a popular carriage route for courting couples.
