[COLOR PLATE] MATTHEWS, WASHINGTON. Memoirs of the American Museum of Natural History Volume VI. Publications of The Hyde Southwestern Expedition. The Night Chant, a Navaho Ceremony.
[Washington: American Museum of Natural History], 1902. First edition. Green cloth. 13 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches (32.75 x 27 cm); xvi, 332 pp.; eight plates (five chromolithographs of sand paintings) and nineteen text figures. A few minor adhesions to the cloth, pale marginal dampstain to the first quarter of the book, in all a sound copy.

A major and quite early account of the nine-night ceremony of the Night Chant by Matthews, a military surgeon who was also a pioneering ethnographer, and who was apparently initiated into a number of secret Navajo rituals.
