Lot 129
[ANGLING-SALMON] Camp New Derreen, Grand Cascapedia.
Manuscript record of salmon caught at Camp New Derreen 1933-1967. Full red morocco, stamped on the upper cover with the name of the camp. 11 x 15 inches (27.5 x 38 cm); approximately 100 leaves of printed ledger paper, 76 ff. (152 pp.) completed, listing date, name of angler, pool, whether salmon or trout (the vast majority of entries are for salmon), the fly used, and remarks. Several further leaves include photographs of record fish, the camp, etc. Some wear and soiling to the binding, generally in excellent condition).

A remarkable record of salmon fishing at Camp New Derreen, which from 1924 to 1952 was owned by Amy Guest, whose name appears many times here. She sold it to Andre Pierre Pillot, whose records also appear in these pages. Given that New Derreen is among the great camps on the river (along with Tracadie, Middle Camp, Lorne Cottage and others), encompassing some of the finest salmon fishing waters in the world, this record book is of exceptional interest. Included is a record for a 55 1/2 pound salmon caught in 1939 by E.B.M. (Esmond Bradley Martin), notated "Thus holding the record of the Grand Cascapedia River!!!" However, Ronald S. Swanson Grand Cascapedia Giants noted this fish as 53 pounds; the true weight of Esmond Bradley Martin's catch was a highly controversial subject for a number of years, making this contemporary record especially intriguing, the more so in that this recorded weight appears to perhaps edge out for first place the fish caught in 1892 by Victor Albert Stanley, which weighed 55 pounds.
