[JAPAN] PERRY, MATTHEW CALBRAITH. Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry.
. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, 1856. First edition, Senate issue. 3 volumes, purple cloth of issue. 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches (28.5 x 22 cm); with approximately 154 plates and maps, many plates in lithotint, vol. 1 with the suppressed nude bathing plate present at p. 408 and both facsimiles present at p. 464. Volume I: 95 plates, including two folding charts and two folding facsimiles of paintings; volume II: 27 plates (most. of natural history, colored as issued; 18 meteorological plates (two folding); the facsimile of the treaty (in text); and 14 large folding maps and charts at end.. Volume III: Star charts. Some fading and wear to bindings as usual, endpaper in second volume toned, generally quite clean internally, one ornithological plate frayed in margins and apparently reinserted, maps a bit misfolded with a tear to the blank fold of the first. The standard references vary on plate counts for this work, thus it is sold as-is.
