James Wardle & Co. Majolica 'Monkey' Chestnut Serving Dish
Circa 1871
Naturalistically modeled as a spade shaped dish molded with chestnut leaves, the handle as a seated monkey in a lavender morning suit eating a nut, the branch handle terminal issuing buds, yellow line rim, impressed registry diamond (28-A-R-5) for 28 August 1871, parcel 5, length 10 1/4 inches; Together with a Mintons Majolica Glazed Chestnut Server. Date cypher for 1878, applied with an open chestnut, the leaves forming a half cover, the border molded with stylized sprays of leaves on a brown-ground, below a shaped rim, turquoise interior, impressed uppercase mark and M, shape no. 594 and black painted 13, width overall 11 inches.
