Note (Wedgwood Majolica Octagonal Email Ombrant 'Tremblay' Pictorial Plate): This example is from a series of approximately twelve plates designs by Thomas Greatbatch, circa 1864, and retailed exclusively by Thomas Goode & Co., London. They are named for the French artist, Alexis Sylvain Baron du Tremblay (1796-1868) of the Rubelles Faience Manufactory, who developed the technique. At Wedgwood, the process is known as émail ombrant or shaded enamel. In this example, the central pictorial scene featuring an intaglio relief depression is flooded with green glaze.
