Minton Majolica Heron and Pike Ewer

Designed by Hugues Protât, shape no. 1241, date cypher for 1871
Naturalistically modeled with gray, blue and white plumage, standing among reeds and lily pads on an oval mound base, with a fish in its beak forming the handle and spout of the ewer, impressed uppercase mark, shape no. and N, signed in the model H. Protât at the base. Height 21 1/4 inches.
Hugues Protât (born 1816, active 1835-1890), was a French sculptor employed in England in the early 1850's. At the Minton Memorial Institute, Stoke, he was appointed 'Modelling Instructor' at the School of Art, 1859-1863, but continued to work in a freelance capacity.
