Lot 288
ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio.
[Antwerp: Abraham Ortelius, 1587, but with the text on the verso indicating inclusion in an edition from 1603-1612]. Ortelius's third plate, first state. Copper engraved map with hand-coloring (likely early), the Latin text on the verso with the third line from the bottom of the text starting with "Promittit & Postellus." 14 x 19 1/4 inches (35.5 x 49), with wider margins. Minor soiling and toning, some old restorations including a tear at lower left, a presently unrestored short tear noted below "Des" in the cartouche.

Oretelius' seminal map of the Americas, from the third plate with the western bulge of South America reduced, published on the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map is further updated from the 1570 and 1579 plates now including the naming of California and the Native American name Wingandkoa on the east coast of North America and the inlet above it thought to be the first depiction of Chesapeake Bay. Burden 64.
