Lot Details

Lot 527
[HINE, CHARLES GILBERT] The Upper End of Manhattan Island in 1904.
[cover title]. Newark?: privately printed, 1904. Paste-paper portfolio with printed cover label, the spine in suede. 9 1/8 x 7 1/8 (23.5 x 18 cm); with 26 tipped-in platinum and two gelatin silver prints, each titled in ink. Some wear to the folder, the gelatin silver prints a little toned, the platinum prints with excellent tones.

The subject of an excellent essay by Barbara Confino on the ICP website, Hine was an extremely good photographer in the Pictorialist manner. This charming little work with original photographs is vanishingly rare, like most of the works by members of the Hine family. We note no copies recorded in institutions on WorldCat.
