[PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM--AMERICA] Voyage aux États-Unis 1876 [cover title].
A 19th century photographic album documenting a tour of the United States, apparently compiled by a French visitor. Album, three-quarters leather, publisher's cloth stamped with the title in gilt. 12 x 18 1/4 inches (35 x 47 cm); approximately 40 card ff. on guards, with mounted photographs (primarily albumen prints), the largest 10 x 12 3/4 inches (250 x 325 mm), though most are smaller. The photographs are mounted one side of the leaf only, and consist of a formal portrait of the traveller (unfortunately unidentified); approximately 79 mounted images of the Northeastern United States, including several fine views of Niagara (including a number of small views from the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition); 102 photographs of Colorado, Utah (including views of Salt Lake City including the Tabernacle), Montana and California (Yosemite); and 5 CDVs including one of Brigham Young on the final leaf. The Western views include a number in large format, perhaps most notable an arch-topped view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Light wear, occasional minor image defects, but a very attractive selection indeed.
Many of the Western views are by William Henry Jackson, including the view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and probably the view of the lower falls of the Yellowstone, and as well probably many of the fine small views of the transcontinental Pacific Railroad, which had opened in 1869. All the views were commercially procured, not taken by the French visitor, so far as we can judge.
