Already a star in Europe, Greta Garbo (1905-1990) made her first American film, "The Torrent" in 1926. She appeared in such famous vehicles as "Anna Christie," "Grand Hotel," and "Camille," but her talking films were never as well received as her silents had been and she was always more popular in Europe than in America. She retired in 1941.
