[MAGIC] HOHMAN, JOHANN GEORG. Der lange verborgene Freund, oder, Getreuer und Christlicher Unterricht fur jedermann: enthaltend...
. Reading, Pennsylvania: "Gedrucht fur den Verfasser" i.e. printed for the author (attributed by Boette & Tannhof to the press of Carl Augustus Bruckman), 1820. First edition. Contemporary calf-backed patterned paper over boards. 7 1/8 x 4 1/4 inches (17.5 x 10 cm); 100 pp. Binding worn, early notes on front endpaper, internally browned, two leaves with a small loss touching one letter.
This work (probably based on earlier works of folk magic in the European tradition such as the various works attributed to Albertus Magnus), was reprinted many times and became closely associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch magic tradition known as Braucherei. Often referred to as the "pow-wow book" in translation (indeed, still in print today), it is a work of broad appeal, as so many of the spells, recipes and remedies are universally applicable to rural concerns, especially those pertaining to both human and animal health. Unsurprisingly, this first edition appears rare, for all editions saw heavy use; in the US, we note just the Wellcome, Library Company and American Antiquarian Society copies (we have sold another example in these rooms in 2013). R.B. Austin Early American Medical Imprints 922; Shoemaker 1642; Boette & Tannhof German printing 2462.
