. Reading: Carl Augustus Bruckman, 1818. First American edition (although no previous editions elsewhere are noted, and Hohman was, as stated on the title, a resident of Alsace Township in Berks County). Original calf-backed blue boards. 7 x 4 1/4 inches (17 x 10 cm); [6] ff., 169, [11] pp. of subscribers. Spine defective, binding soiled, the foot of two leaves missing from the initial table of contents with the loss of several lines.
An earlier publication, also a "secret book" by the author of the foundational work of Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic Der lange verborgene Freund. It is of especial interest for the dye receipts, mostly for wool. Shoemaker 44367 locates the Huntington, Library of Congress, American Antiquarian and Pennsylvania State copies; WorldCat just a single copy in an overseas collection.
