Indo-Portuguese Inlaid Cabinet on Stand Achieves $37,500

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction on October 31, 2018 offered English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts, Old Master Paintings, and Russian Works of Art from prominent estates and collections. Spanning the Italian Renaissance through the English Regency, the sale presented a broad selection of elegant furniture, decorations, Georgian silver, porcelain, sculpture, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, sconces, tapestries and rugs.

With competitive international bidding in the saleroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the auction totaled $2,682,065 against an estimate of $2,074,300-3,141,900, with a strong 81% sold by lot and 93% sold by value.

Highlighting the sale was an elaborately inlaid Indo-Portuguese cabinet on stand that achieved $37,500, surpassing its estimate of $15,000. Dating to the late 17th/early 18th century and likely made in Goa, the cabinet was decorated with carvings of nagas or naginis, auspicious Hindu snake divinities that bring good fortune and ward against dangers.

A special section of the sale was devoted to property from the Collection of Marianne Schaller, whose husband, Ferdinand Schaller, established the famed Upper East Side butcher shop, Schaller & Weber. Highlights included a Rococo giltwood console table, possibly Austrian, that fetched $16,250, more than doubling its $5,000-7,000 estimate, in addition to exceptional English furnishings acquired from such prominent firms as Stair & Company of London and New York and Vernay & Jussel. Silver from the Estate of Barbara Wainscott, who counted Presidents and the British Royal Family among her circle of friends, performed very strongly at the sale. A group of three English sterling silver Royal presentation frames by H.H. Plante, Birmingham, 1936 and London, 1964, engraved with the cipher of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, each with signed photographs, sold for $10,000, surpassing its estimate of $3,000-5,000. An Imperial German silver flatware service by Johann Wagner & Sohn, circa 1900, engraved with the monogram of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Imperial Prussian Eagle fetched $10,000, many times its estimate of $2,500-3,500.

Old Master Paintings & Drawings

The sale offered over a wide range of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the early 19th century. Featured was an early portrait by the great Romantic master Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) whose work is currently the subject of an important exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The portrait depicting the artist's nephew, Charles de Verninac, realized an exceptional $495,000. Read More
